151002 SU Halftime for UCCTRI CITY, Ore. -- The Myrtle Creek/Tri City community came together for more than just watching the South Umpqua Lancers whip up on visiting Brookings-Harbor at Kent Wigle Stadium Friday night.

The Lancers took a 19-0 lead into the locker room at the half, but before the 15 minute timer started for the halftime break, fans in the bleachers were invited to leave the stadium seats and join the players down on the field as they held a vigil to honor the victims of the tragic mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg a day earlier.

Community member Jeff Johnson, owner of local Del's Building Supply, led the memorial, inviting the Brookings-Harbor players and fans to join them.

Many were given a green or white balloon -- the school colors of the UCC Riverhawks. In a symbolic gesture the white balloons were released first, followed by the green balloons. The crowd watched in silence as the balloons floated away, disappearing into the night sky.151002 SU Halftime for UCC 2

Others carried candles, hoisting them up as Pastor Dan Jacoy led the audience in prayer before Taps was played by two buglers.

The names of the victims were read to the audience:

Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18

Treven Taylor Anspach, 20

Sarena Dawn Moore, 44

Lawrence Levine, 67

Jason Dale Johnson, 34

Lucas Eibel, 18

Kim Saltmarsh Dietz, 59

Quinn Glen Cooper, 18

During the reading of the names, Johnson shared that Rebecka Carnes was a South Umpqua graduate who had stood on that very field at Kent Wigle Stadium in June during SU's 2015 graduation ceremony.

The vigil continued for just under 10 minutes before the crowd was dismissed and made its way back to the bleachers. The Lancers and Bruins headed to their respective locker rooms as the 15 minute halftime clock officially started ticking.

"Thank you very much for sharing this special moment with us," Johnson said at the ceremony's close. "We will never forget the ones we lost yesterday."
