TRI CITY, Ore. -- With some games around the state postponed or moved due to smoke from wildfires throughout Oregon, Kent Wigle Stadium in Tri City somehow became a bubble of fresh air as smoke surrounded the outskirts but the playing field remained unaffected.
The South Umpqua Lancers, meanwhile, had another challenge ahead with a season opening non-conference game against visiting Mazama.
SU fell behind early, setting the tone for the Vikings' 46-20 road win.
The Lancers trailed 14-0 early in the contest before battling back to trail 22-14 at halftime.
But Mazama was just too much for the Lancers and pulled away in the second half.
Quarterback William Wylie had a touchdown run and threw for a touchdown to Johnathan Warner.
SU is scheduled to play at North Valley on Sept. 8.
