ROSEBURG, Ore. -- On Saturday, January 12, the Roseburg Elks Lodge held their annual Hoop Shoot competion at Fremont Middle School.
Sixteen boys and twelve girls, ages 8-13, squared off for the opportunity to compete at the District Hoop Shoot in Ashland on January 26.
Each child had 25 shots from the free throw line, with the winner being the one with the most baskets made.
Finalist included last year’s state competitors, brothers Micah and Joseph Fusco.
Winners for the 8-9 year olds were Ryder Kahler of Melrose Elementary and Lillian Hollenbeck of Sunnyslope Elementary.
Successful hoop shooters for the 10-11 year olds include Micah Fusco of Geneva Academy and Khloe Grotting of West Intermediate in Sutherlin.
The winning 12-13 year olds were Joseph Fusco of Geneva Academy and Kaitlyn Nunley of Freemont.
Upon a win at district, any of these six skilled free-throwers could work their way up to the State Hoop Shoot in Silverton, then to the Regional Hoop Shoot in Vancouver, Washington.
The final level of competition is the National Hoop Shoot playoff in Chicagos on April 27.
The national winners play for the opportunity to have their name placed in the Basketball Hall of Fame.
The Roseburg Elks have been sponsoring the annual Hoop Shoot for over 50 years.
