More than 50 local athletes competed at the Special Olympics 'Summer State Games' in Newberg.

Douglas County gold medalists included Kevin Cannon (bocce); Heather Tooth (track and field); Carol Tooth (track and field); Stephen Morgan (track and field); and Ronelle Brown (track and field).

"Both of our coach-pitch and traditional softball teams won silver medals at the games," assistant coach Amy Sherman said. "The Douglas Hitters' team also took home the sportsmanship award." 

Olympians competed in track and field; bocce; golf; softball; and gymnastics.

The three-day event took place July 15-17.
