Two long-time rivals of Roseburg's Dr. Stewart's squared off Sunday for the state title.

The Eugene Challengers mustered just enough fuel to keep up with the Medford Mustangs and come from behind for a 13-6 victory in the championship game of the 'AAA' Oregon State American Legion Baseball Tournament at Concordia University in Portland Sunday. The Challengerss now advance to the Northwest Regional Tournament in Billings, Montana with the winner of that tourney advancing to the American Legion World Series.

Eugene competed earlier in the day against Salem Withnell for a chance to play for the title, a game the Challengers won 5-4 in come-from-behind fashion as well.

Medford was the last team to lose a game in the double-elimination tournament, giving the Mustangs an automatic berth in the championship game. The Eugene-Medford match-up featured rivals from the same league as both teams compete in the five-team Area-4 Conference. Eugene finished in second place with a 10-6 league record, while the Mustangs were third at 7-9. (Area-4 champ Grants Pass was eliminated earlier in the tournament)

The Challengers had to beat Roseburg's Dr. Stewart's twice in the final day of the Super Regional in Eugene in July gto advance to state.

The title win Sunday gives Eugene (48-14 overall) its third state title in its 37-year existence and its first since 1999. The Challengers last played for the title in 2002.
