Former Roseburg baseball standout Cameron Newell was named Player of the Week August 6th for his play during the previous week in the West Coast League.

Newell, a 2010 Roseburg High graduate and member of the 2010 Dr. Stewart's state and regional championship team, is batting .388 in 103 at bats with two home runs, eight doubles and 17 RBIs for the Klamath Falls Gems. He is the Gems' top hitter this summer.

Klamath is 25-29 in the WCL's South Division, 12 games behind division leading Corvallis.

The West Coast League was founded in 2005 and offers collegiate players and professional prospects opportunity to continue playing after the spring college season ends. The South Division of the WCL features Oregon teams such as Newell's Gems from Klamath Falls, Corvallis, Medford, and Bend.

Newell just finished his sophomore year at UC-Santa Barbara this spring. He played in 59 games with 258 plate appearances for his first season with the Gauchos, leading the squad with 69 hits for a .309 batting average with 37 runs, 26 RBIs, 6 doubles, and a triple.

In the outfield, he grabbed 154 put outs and recorded three assists for a .981 fielding percentage. He earned Honorable Mention for the All-Big West team in addition to the Big West Field Player of the Week (4/29) after hitting .643 over four games.
