The Far West League basketball season got underway Friday night.

Erik Johnson hit the game winner at the buzzer to lead South Umpqua to a 58-56 overtime win at Siuslaw.

The junior guard scored all six SU points in the extra period and finished with a game-high 34 points.

Sutherlin lost to Brookings-Harbor 50-48; and Douglas was beaten by FWL newcomer Marshfield 65-37.

On the girls' side, Sutherlin (1-0, 9-0) beat Brookings 65-45; Douglas upended Marshfield 48-46; and South Umpqua lost to Siuslaw 49-32.
