The Elkton Elks whittled down Yoncalla's 10-point lead to as little as two midway through the third quarter, but the Lady Eagles held on and pulled away in the fourth for a 39-27 win in a Skyline League girls basketball playoff Tuesday at Umpqua Valley Christian School in Dixonville. With the win, the Eagles (17-7 overall) essentially broke a first-place tie against league co-champion rival Elkton (16-7) and will head to the state playoffs as the top seed from the conference. In boys basketball, Sutherlin avenged an earlier loss by defeating Marshfield 50-46 in an important Far West League match-up in Sutherlin. If the Bulldogs beat Douglas Friday night, the two teams will finish in a tie at the top of the Far West and a playoff game will take place Monday evening at Coquille High School.
