Gabby2 0038Roseburg's Gabrielle Kearney has been chosen The Oregonian's 2014 girls track and field athlete of the year by a vote of the newspaper's high school sports staff and readers.

She won the 6A state title with a throw of 164 feet and in May, she competed at the Oregon Twilight meet and beat a field of collegiate athletes for first place. Kearney has also met the qualifying standard for the IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships, which will be held July 22-27 at Hayward Field in Eugene.

On June 19, The Oregonian will announce the recipient of the Athlete of the Year award, an honor that crosses classifications and sports to distinguish the school year's very best.
