Douglas County's officiating ranks for high school athletics are down this season and the local association is looking for your help.
Douglas County sports commissioners are in need of folks to become active members in officiating a sport of their choice. Each sport has various levels of fitness requirements, uniform and appearance standards as well as rule and administrative procedures that need to be followed.
Officials are paid based on availablity and experience.
Training is available at national, regional, state and local levels. The cost of trainging is tax deductible. Each new member needs to be drug and alcohol non-dependent and practice behavior that represents association standards to enter into county schools.
Douglas County sports officials service 16-18 area high schools and allied middle schools. Each sports association has specific meeting dates and training requirements, along with uniforms specifically mandated by the National Federation of High School sports. A cost to be uniformed is approximately $100 - $150.
Background checks are conducted by Oregon Schools Activities Association as part of the registration which is approximately $60 per sport.
A rules test is given for each sport. Each association establishes its own criteria to become varsity members. Each sport requires approximately 2-4 hours of time to administer a game per assignment.
Members establish their own availability and day(s) they wish to work, and officials act as independent contractors.
A background in sports is helpful but not required and a pre-season physical is suggested. Game fees range from $ 35 to $ 45 per game plus mileage. Each association has its own payment methods.
