Skyline League Champion Days Creek beat Sherman 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 17-25, 15-12 Saturday night to earn a spot in the upcoming 1A State Tournament in Forest Grove. With the victory, the Wolves improved to 22-2 on the season.
"These were two solid, evenly matched teams," Days Creek head coach Ron Dunn said. "Senior Abiyah Watkins played a great match and our home crowd really made the difference."
The Wolves open tournament play Friday morning at 10:00AM against Imbler.
The Douglas High school volleyball team has also qualified for the OSAA State Tournament. The Trojans beat LaGrande in five-games to wrap-up a spot in the 4A Tourney set to begin Friday at Lane Community College in Eugene.
Yoncalla and North Douglas came up one win shy of earning a trip to the 2A State Tournament next week in Forest Grove. The Eagles cruised through the regular season, but fell to Elgin 25-14, 10-25, 25-12, 19-25, 17-15 Saturday afternoon in Yoncalla. The Warriors lost in four games at Bonanza.
"We had a little case of the nerves early on and didn't serve-receive very well in the first game," North Douglas head coach Anne Campbell said. "The girls finally got things going midway through the second game and they really played great in game three."
Also, Roseburg's season came to an end Saturday night with its 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 loss at Canby.
There were two local soccer teams in action Saturday afternoon. The Roseburg boys were beaten by Jesuit 3-1 and the Umpqua Valley Christian girls lost to Sisters 5-2 at River Forks Park.
"We gave up three early goals, but we eventually settled down and gave them a good run," Monarchs' head coach Joe Falls said. "We're the only 1A school in the state that has a girls soccer team, so I'm very proud of what we accomplished."
